True, in the last year I have spent over 4,000 on fencing three lots with both privacy and chain link fence, two outdoor kennels, two extra large doghouses for each. A large kennel for in the truck and then a registered rottweiler puppy. This is not taken into consideration the vet, food and toys.

The next poster, would trust there pet (dog or cat) more then the people they work with.

True! Very Happy I also trust my dog to alert me to people that he doesn't trust. I think everyone knows what I'm talking about. There are those select few people that you just know that your dog doesn't trust. There is a different attitude your pet takes on when around these people! I wish my instinct was that good!

True!!! So does my mom. Guess I got it honestly! She's even run off the road to avoid less desirable animals, like skunks and possoms!

TRUE. I did turn my neighbor in that abused his German Shepard. I was renting a house and they guy across the street tied his dog on a short chain with no food or water and the poor thing was loaded with fleas. When I confronted him he said he wanted a watch dog and he was trying to make him mean. The dog was friendly to everyone. I told him all he was doing was making the dog weak and that I wouldn't stand around and watch the dog suffer. He did nothing. Later that week I told him I would report him and he still did nothing. I used to drink coffee with his wife on my porch in the mornings when I worked afternoon shift. She was very nice but I think she was even afraid of her husband. One morning I told her I was going to turn them in as soon as the shelter opened that day and she said to go ahead. Rolling Eyes So I did.
The dog ended up in a nice home with kids and a fenced yard. Excited

The best part of the story is that the people who adopted the dog ironically lived up the street and every time his former owner would walk by, the dog would run the fence and bark like he was ready to tear him apart! Laugh

The next poster has paid to have a vet look at a injured stray even though they didn't keep it.

True! I wouldn't raise a child without having pets in the home. For a child to value the life of a pet, makes them value human life and rights even more.

True or False, The next poster has attempted to nurse/rescue an abandoned baby animal (bird, squirl, etc.) despite knowing that it probably wouldn't survive.

True and False! Shrug Although soliciting within 500 ft. of a store without a permit is not allowed around here anymore. I don't mind Salvation Army at Christmas. Schools, churches etc. can solicit with a permit but they have to have a table set up (I think 20 feet) from the door and they are not allowed to approach you, you have to go to the table to donate.

Re: True or False

Post  Riverdog on Fri Sep 26, 2008 3:32 pm

True. But I didn't know what I was getting into! Flood of 1985. We lost our camp and even the ground it sat on was washed away to bare rock. Two family friends died in the flood. I loaded up my truck with batteries, flashlights, radios and blankets donated by Radio Shack and Big Lots. A close friend went with me, our goal was to reach the church in Petersburg WV where a family friend was organizing the rescue efforts. Petersburg is three hours away and most of narrow two lane road was washed out so I had two tires riding the side of the hill and two tires on what was left of the road. If I slid off I would have rolled down a mountain side hundreds of feet below. Francis

I was the only car on the road besides army tanks. Yes tanks! (rumors of washed up hidden missile silos was starting to spread) Fear At the time, the underground bunker at the Greenbrier Resort was still top secret. When I reached the outskirts of Petersburg the Nation Guard had a row of chairs blocking the road with soldiers sitting in them with guns. They could not believe that I actually had made it that far. I ended up with a army escort to the church which was still another 25 miles away on a narrow road. They were afraid I would get attacked, robbed or mobbed of my cargo so I was lucky to get an escort. The story goes on, but just getting there was the most traumatic thing that I ever experienced!

Following Halloween on October the 31st, 1985, remnants of Hurricane Juan which had ravaged the southern coasts, crossed into the Allegheny Mountains where it lingered for several days, saturating the ground with downpour after downpour. A day later on November the Fourth, another storm front entered West Virginia which dumped upwards of 8 inches of rain in a 24 hour period, causing massive flooding through the state for the next few days. As the flood waters receded, it became apparent that whole communities had practically disappeared along with thousands of homes and personal belongings, in addition to forty people who had lost their lives as a result of the flood waters. Some people called this the 10,000 Year Flood, while others gave it a more simple name - Hell.

The next poster has been lucky enough to have that "one" Lassie type dog that there will never be another dog that can match up to it. Even though you love all your pets, there was that one "special" pet that there could be no other.
