Yup.. Diamond isn't the best brand of dog food, IMO. Their Chicken Soup and TofW formulas are their best at the moment.

Have been using the Purina Pro Plan on my newest puppy. I use the Science diet light on my overweight adult chair warmer.

SD is a rip off, IMO. That is all I'll say. tongue

SD is a rip off. Compare the list of ingredients to Pro Plan is all I'm going to say. Grab a handful of SD and put it in a glass of water and see what floats to the top the next day. Do the same with Pro Plan. Whistle Let me know what you observe. Even some of the higher quality foods have horrible manufacturing quality control. Which means finding rat parts & hair floating in the food after a day soaking in water. Pro Plan's quality control is excellent.

79 of the top 100 American Kennel Club champions are fed Pro Plan. Uno, Westminster Dog Show 2008 winner chow of choice is turkey-and-barley flavored Pro Plan Selects. (Pro Plan must be doing something right)

Doc likes Pro Plan Natural Lamb & Oat Meal Formula Clicky
The #1 Ingredient Is Real New Zealand And Australian Lamb, Raised Without Hormones
Formulated Without Ground Corn, Lamb By-Products or Artificial Colors or Flavors
Rich in Omega-3 Fatty Acids, Including DHA and EPA
Formulated with Antioxidants, Including Those from Sun-Dried Tomatoes, Blueberry Pomace and Sweet Potatoes

Here are the SD Light first 4 ingredients:
Sick
Soybean Mill Run 16%
Chicken By-product Meal
Peanut Hulls
Corn Gluten Meal

Your couch potato would probably have a better chance to loose weight on the regular Pro Plan Select after reading the SD ingredients but I would ask your vet first. I'm also wary of vets that sell ALL the different brands of foods. It's like their not convinced that one food is better than the other. Either that, or they don't care which one you buy as long as you buy one. You can also call Cindy she would be happy to go over the different foods with you. All JAH sells is Pro Plan. She has studied them all.

One thing to remember. Some foods even though they have excellent ingredients takes less to feed. Which means your dog will still be hungry! Same goes with store bought cheap foods. It takes more to feed but most of that crap isn't absorbed by the body (except the calories) and your dog is STILL hungry! The idea is to have a good balance. I put Doc's food out in the morning and he munches on it all day. He has no urge to gobble it up like he's starving to death. If you ate all your daily nutrition in one small bowl in the morning I guarantee you would be still be hungry before you went to bed.

I mostly use regular Pro Plan but I feed table food too. The corn doesn't bother Doc even though some dogs have allergies to it. Every once in awhile he gets Pro Plan Select too but it is expensive so I mix it with the regular.
I have to watch because Doc does eat what we eat so I have to be careful! Blush

I don't think Cindy is very happy with me feeding Doc table food on a regular basis but I don't feed scraps that I wouldn't eat myself. In other words if you cut the fat off a piece of steak don't give it to your dog either! If you won't eat it then don't give it to your dog. I have always followed that rule and my dogs have never been sick and I never had a dog die before the age of 14. All large breed dogs. Cindy says I'm just lucky. Laugh

I lied. I just remembered that Annie got sick when she was 12. She had a hairball the size of a grapefruit and had to have surgery. Annie was a licker. She licked the carpet, Rooney, her toys and everything else! She ended up developing a hairball like a cat. Wacko
