Micro Chip for pets

I need any information on mirco-chips for pets, I would like to micro chip my puppies before they go on to there forever home, but know nothing about it. Some tell me to order the kits online and then do it myself. some say use a vet, Any input is welcomed.

Wonder if the microchips you buy online can be read by the scanners the vets use? I didn't know you could even buy a kit online until I did a search! I think I would call a few vets and animal shelters and see what type of scanner is used and if an online kit uses the same database.

I know if I found a dog that I would probably take it to a vet or animal shelter to be scanned for a chip. I would think they all use a universal database. But I noticed a few of the online kits use their own database. I wonder if you have to have a special scanner to read a particular microchip? I'm confused!

As far as health concerns involving self chipping, I have no idea. I guess if you know how to do it there wouldn't be a problem. I would be afraid that I would hit something I wasn't suppose to. I guess it can be painful to a small dog or puppy. I tried Google for answers and found this:

I guess it's easy for them to say it almost painless, since they are not the one on the end with the large needle. I think I will wait till my new puppy get older to do it, when she has a lot more extra skin away from anything that shouldn't be stuck.

I'd check with the pound to see if they even scan for microchips before wasting your money. I have a feeling they don't but it'd be good to check anyhow.

I guess I mostly want to be able to prove it's my dog if someone takes one of them. To me that would be a fool proof way.
