I'll see what I can find out from JAH. I think JAH always waits a few years after a product comes out before using it or recommending it, but they may know something about it. Shrug

Personally, I hesitate to give my dog any insecticide orally, especially after reading the toxicity reports and side effects. The Comfortis field studies states that "the cause of seizers observed in the field studies could not be determined". I always like to wait 3-4 years after a product comes out to see what harm the product is actually doing. Comfortis does not kill ticks.

After reading it looks like the active ingredient in Comfortis is used as an organic crop pesticide. It comes form a natural source and is not synthetic. Still there are a bunch of organic poisons out there that I would not want to swallow, so I'm still not sure how I feel about it.

I may be overly paranoid because my sister died from insecticide poisoning. The chemicals attached themselves to her fatty tissues and could not be removed. There was a experimental detox program that had started in Texas but she died before ever being able to try it. So I'm a little jumpy when it comes to insecticides even though I use Frontline myself. At least Frontline is not ingested and it has been around for years.

Here is what I have found out by Googling:

It has to be given on a full stomach and is also beef and pork flavored so if a dog has food allergy to either, it cant be used. There are also some skin treatments that cannot be used in conjunction with Comfortis

The side effects noted:

Testing was on 50 dogs.....12% of dogs vomited after taking it the first time, 5% had a reduced appetite and another 5% having diarrhea.

It should not be used in dogs who have any type of seizure disorders, it was shown to cause them to have one after taking the med's. They don't really know why and recommend that dogs with seizure disorders should use a different flea control product.

The product is not to be used in pregnant or nursing females. During initial testing it was given to pregnant and nursing mothers and some problems listed were loss of litter during pregnancy, poor weight gain of puppies, and vomiting.

There are some long term questions regarding issues with the liver, but most of them are no different then taking any medications.

The main side effects are: vomiting, decreased appetite, lethargy, diarrhea, coughing, excessive water intake, vocalization, increased appetite, Erythema, hyperactivity and excessive salivation.

I personally wouldn't give it to my dogs.. To me it's like putting them on a medication that they don't need especially when there are products like frontline that can just be applied to the coat without any damage and works nicely.

Thanks for the feedback, all the research I did on the internet scared me, just wanted to make sure I was getting the information correct. I always ask a lot of question from people who use anything new.
